history

Marubeni goes back to the linen trade founded by Itō Chūbē in 1858, from which the Sōgō Shōsha Itōchū Shōji also emerged . In 1918, the two companies KK Itōchū Shōten ( (株) 伊藤忠 商店 ) as a forerunner of Marubeni and Itōchū Shōji KK ( 伊藤忠 商 事 (株) ) were separated. Three years later, in 1921, Itōchū Shōten was renamed Marubeni after merging with Itō Chōbē Shōten ( 伊藤 長 兵衛 商店 ), the business of Itō Chūbē's brother.

In the Pacific War , Marubeni and Itōchū were reunited in 1941 (together with Kishimoto Shōten) into one company, Sankō KK ( 三 興 (株 ), which after merging with other companies in 1944 was finally called Daiken Sangyō ( 大建 産業 ).

In 1949 Daiken Sangyō was broken up and reorganized into four independent companies: On December 1, 1949, the Marubeni KK was founded in its current form.

Between 1955 and 1972, after the merger with Takashimaya Iida KK (Fuyō Group), Marubeni operated as Marubeni Iida KK (English Marubeni-Iida Co., Ltd. ). Further mergers took place in 1966 with the steel trading company Tōtsū KK (Fuyō Group) and in 1973 with the non-ferrous metal trader KK Nan'yō Bussan.

In 2003 the company's headquarters were relocated to Chiyoda, Tokyo.
