history

The JTSB was founded on June 20, 2000 by Daiwa Bank, Limited (now: Resona Bank, Limited) and Sumitomo Trust & Banking Co., Ltd. (today: Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Limited) and started operations on July 25, 2000. It is the first trust bank in Japan to specialize in asset management. Initially, Sumitomo Trust & Banking transferred part of its assets and its trust business to JTSB in October 2000, followed by Daiwa Bank in June 2001. In September 2002 the Mitsui Trust Financial Group invested in the JTSB and a year later, like the parent company, transferred its trust business and parts of its assets to the JTSB. In April 2011, Chuo Mitsui Trust Holdings merged with Sumitomo Trust & Banking to become Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings.

In 2014, several banks, including the JTSB, sued Olympus Corporation for a sum of ¥ 27,900,000,000 over losses incurred in Olympus' 2011 accounting scandal.

On August 9, 2016, JTSB sued Toshiba Corporation for a sum of ¥ 11,990,000,000 due to a similar Toshiba scandal in 2015.

The Mizuho Financial Group and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings plan to merge their respective Trust Banks, the Trust & Custody Services Bank and JTSB to 2020th

Shareholder

The two shareholders of JTSB are the parent companies Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings and Resona Bank. Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings owns 680,0000 shares (two thirds) while Resona Bank owns 340,0000 shares (one third).
