Exile (spelling: EXILE) is a 19-member Japanese pop and dance group. Group member Hiro is the band leader who made his debut as part of the group Zoo , with the record label For Life Music . However, the releases were released through Rhythm Zone, a sub-label of Avex . Hiro and the president of Avex, Max Matsuura, went to the same school.

In total, the band has sold more than 20 million units in Japan alone.

history

The current band leader, Hiro, was actually a member of the group Zoo , which broke up in 1995. In 1999 he founded a new music group called J Soul Brothers and later changed the name to Exile in 2001 . (However, Hiro started a new band project in 2007, which he named J Soul Brothers .)

Atsushi and Shun became the front men of the group and accompany them with their singing. Atsushi is a fan of the American R&B group Boyz II Men . In November 2003, the band re-recorded Zoo's hit single, Choo Choo Train , and received heavy advertising for their third studio album, Exile Entertainment . The album sold more than a million copies in Japan. They were also part of the Kōhaku Uta alleys in 2003 and performed for Choo Choo Train . In the beginning, Exiles music was clearly influenced by the R&B genre, later the band moved further and further into the oriental pop genre. They reached their first number 1 in the Oricon single charts with the single Real World , and they also released a collaboration called Scream with the Japanese rock group Glay . The single sold more than 500,000 times and landed at number 1 on the Oricon charts.

Group member Shun left the group in March 2006 because he wanted to focus on his solo career. Then a new singer was wanted to join the group and so, in September 2006, Takahiro joined the group. Although he had wanted to be a hairdresser since high school , he decided to join the band.

In 2007 Exile released their studio album Exile Love and set another milestone as the album was the best-selling album in Japan in 2008 with almost 1.5 million units sold. The compilation Exile Ballad Best sold almost a million copies in the first week and thus secured first place on the Oricon album charts. The song Ti Amo , which appeared on Exile Ballad Best , was awarded a Million by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) because the song was legally downloaded one million times. They also won the Grand Prix Award at the 50th Japan Record Awards for the song Ti Amo .

On February 17, 2009, Exile released their first download single, which was called The Next Door and was used as the theme song for the Japanese version of Street Fighter IV . At the same time there was also an English version, The Next Door: Indestructible , which was used for the international version of the game. A collaboration with rapper Flo Rida on The Next Door: Indestructible was also later released.

Exile and J Soul Brothers announced on March 1, 2009 that they were uniting to become a group of 14. The first studio album, as a 14-member band, was released on December 2, 2009, was called Aisubeki Mirai e ( Japanese 愛 す べ き 未来 へ ) and was able to build on the previous success. They also won a Grand Prix Award for the song Someday at the 51st Japan Record Awards.

In 2011 and 2012 Exile were nominated for the EMAs in the Best Asian Act category.
