Southern All Stars ( Japanese サ ザ ン オ ー ル ス タ ー ズ sazan ōru sutāzu ) is a Japanese rock group from Yokohama that is under contract with the Amuse agency . The band is considered special because they have been on stage for over 30 years and still inspire young people today. That makes them a cross-generational cultural asset in a musically very fast-moving country like Japan.

history

While studying at Aoyama Gakuin University , Kuwata Keisuke played in a band called Better Days . There he also met Hara Yuko and Sekiguchi Kazuyuki. That marked the beginning of the Southern All Stars.

The Southern All Stars released their debut single, Katte ni Shindobaddo (勝 手 に シ ン ド バ ッ ド) on June 25, 1978 . Good lyrics and distinctive melodies made the Southern All Stars famous and popular all over Japan. Due to their special style, they were initially decried as a comic band by critics . These negative reviews fell silent over time and at the latest since their third single Itoshi no Erī (い と し の エ リ ー), which celebrated a huge success in 1979, the Southern All Stars have become a constant in the otherwise fast-paced Japanese music world. Her 44th single TSUNAMI sold 3 million copies and won the 42nd Japan Record Grand Prize in 2000 . In 2003 the band celebrated their 25th anniversary.

October 2005 came out the last studio album Killer Street and immediately rose to number 1 in the Japanese charts.

On May 18, 2008, Victor Entertainment announced that Southern All Stars will be taking a break in 2009. The artists themselves will continue to pursue their individual activities. However, the band will get back together at some unsettled time in the future.

In July 2010 singer Kuwata Keisuke was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and all tours and releases of the band that were planned until the end of the year were postponed or canceled completely. The cancer was surgically removed and Kuwata was able to perform as a solo artist with a new song on December 31, 2010 at the 61st Kōhaku Uta Gassen .

The group's pieces cover a wide range of music. Love songs, ballads, socially critical and humorous songs are part of the repertoire of the Southern All Stars.
