Super Junior (Hangul: 슈퍼 주니어 , also called SuJu or SJ ) is a boy band from South Korea , which was founded by producer Lee Soo-Man under SM Entertainment . The group originally consisted of 12 members (Leeteuk, Heechul, Hankyung, Kangin, Yesung, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook and Kibum) and was known as the largest boy band in the world. On November 6, 2005, the group made their debut in the SBS Popular Song music program with their single Twins (Knock Out) , under the name Super Junior 05. A year later, they received their 13th member Kyuhyun and were finally called Super Junior. In 2008, Henry and Zhoumi joined the group as official members of the Super Junior-M sub-group.

Super Junior achieved global success in 2009 with the release of their album Sorry, Sorry (Hangul: 쏘리 쏘리) with the theme song Sorry, Sorry (Hangul: 쏘리 쏘리). Over the years, sub-groups specializing in different styles of music have been formed in order to exploit the full potential of the members. The best known sub-group is Super Junior-M, which was founded to also participate in the Chinese music market, whereby the group is mainly active in China. In addition, the members Kyuhyun, Ryeowook and Yesung have already released solo albums and are active in the general media industry.

history

In 2000, SM Entertainment held a casting for the first time in China , recruiting Hangkyung, who prevailed from around 3,000 applicants. In the same year Leeteuk, Yesung and Eunhyuk joined after they were accepted as trainees at a casting in Seoul. Sungmin and Donghae were also inducted after they both won first place together in one of SM Entertainment's competitions. In 2002, Kibum was discovered in Los Angeles by an agent of the agency and recruited along with Heechul and Kangin. Siwon was scouted by the agency in 2003 and also became a trainee, Shindong followed in 2004. Ryeowook was accepted as an additional trainee in 2005, just two months before his debut after winning the 2004 Chin Chin Youth Festival singing competition. Kyuhyun became a trainee at SM Entertainment in 2005 after winning third place at the Chin Chin Youth Festival 2005 and joined the group in 2006.

In early 2005, Lee Soo-man announced that he wanted the band to debut with 12 members by the end of the year. He called the group "The Gateway to Stardom of Asia" because most of the members had prior experience as actors, MCs, models and DJs. Inspired by the rational concept of the Japanese band Morning Musume , Lee Soo-man planned to replace members with others every year in order to keep the group “young”. This concept was previously unknown in K-Pop. Since the agency always referred to the group as Juniors, this name soon caught on and eventually became Super Junior. Since the twelve members should be the first generation Super Junior, the group was officially called Super Junior 05 .

Super Junior 05 made a pre-debut on the Korean channel Mnet on September 11, 2005, where they performed different styles of hip-hop and danced to B2K's "Take It to the Floor". Hankyung, Eunhyuk and Donghae danced in addition to Usher 's "Chaught Up".

Debut 2005

Super Junior 05 made their official debut on November 6, 2005 SBS 's music program Popular Song, where they presented their first single, "Twins (Knock Out)". A download single with "Twins (Knock Out)", "You are the One", and three additional songs was released online just two days later on November 8th, followed by their debut album "Twins" on December 6th, 2005. This one Album already sold 28,536 copies in the first month and got the third best-selling album of December.

2006-2007

In February 2006, the performance began with "Miracle", also a song from their debut album, which hit the charts in Thailand and brought international attention. SM Entertainment began recruiting members for the next generation, Super Junior 06, and prepared a list of members who would drop out. However, the agency finally rejected this concept and only brought a 13th member, Cho Kyuhyun, into the group, with Super Junior losing the suffix “05” and now officially becoming Super Junior.

After the completion of the group, they released their second single "U" for free download on May 25, 2006 , which was downloaded over 400,000 times and finally got over 1.7 million clicks within five hours and caused a server failure. This single became the most successful song of the year and after the release of the CD with a total of 3 songs sold over 81,000 times. By the end of the year, Super Junior received more than 7 awards from various Korean music awards, including the Newcomer Award of the 21st Golden Disk Awards .

At the end of 2006 Super Junior's first subunit called Super Junior-KRY made its debut. In February 2007, the second subunit, Super Junior-T , followed, which specialized in trot music.

2008: super show

Super Junior in Bangkok , Thailand

The motto for 2008 was to conquer the Asian market. The highlight at the beginning of the year was the first Asia Tour Super Show , which ran from Seoul via Beijing, Bangkok to Tokyo and Hong Kong. During this tour, the band sang everything live, except for 6 songs, which is to be understood as an answer to the severe criticism that their not necessarily synchronized playback appearances have received. The response to this step and the entire tour silenced the critics.

On August 2nd, Super Junior also won the MTV Asia Awards in the “Most Popular Korean Artist” category, beating other bands like Big Bang , Wonder Girls and Girls' Generation .

2009: Sorry, Sorry - the third album

After a year and a half, during which Super Junior took care of their subgroup activities and solo projects such as roles in films, series and even musicals, the third album Sorry Sorry was released on March 12th . It sold 29,000 times on the first day. Even after months, sales continued to rise. In summer 2009 the fourth version of the album was released, this time in Thailand and with DVD. The single Sorry, Sorry was also available in a Japanese version. On May 12th, the second single It´s You was released . The still uncut video appeared on the internet before it was officially released. A little later there were other versions, a dance and a drama version, but this time officially.

On July 17th, Super Show 2 kicked off with three concerts in Seoul, broadcast live by a Chinese radio station. It was also accessed via an internet server. Leeteuk announced in the press conference that took place one day later that the tour would go through 15 cities.

2010: Bonamana - The fourth album, Super Show 3

The teaser for the new album "Bonamana" was released on May 7th, and the single Bonamana was released a few days later . The video and the comeback stage followed on May 14, but this time only with ten instead of thirteen members. The fourth album Bonamana was released on May 26, and the third super show tour started in August.

2011: Mr. Simple - The fifth album, world tour Super Show 4

On August 3, 2011, the group released the fifth album Mr. Simple with a total of 10 active members. With over 340,000 copies sold, Mr. Simple is the second best-selling album of 2011 in South Korea, and by the end of 2012 over 500,000 albums had been sold. On November 19, 2011, the first Super Show 4 world tour started in South Korea with concerts in Asia and Europe.

2012–2013: Sexy, Free & Single - The sixth album, world tour Super Show 5

After a long hiatus, Super Junior released their 6th album called Sexy, Free & Single on July 1st, 2012 with a cast of 10 active members . On March 23, 2013 the second world tour Super Show 5 started with concerts in Asia, South America and Europe. On January 7, 2013, the sub-group Super Junior-M released the album Break Down .

2014: Mamacita - The seventh album, world tour Super Show 6

On September 1, 2014, the seventh album Mamacita by Super Junior was released. Super Junior will also start their Super Show 6 world tour in South Korea in September . Also published Super Junior-M on March 21, their third album Swing . Kyuhyun's debut album was released in October 2014.

2015: Devil - 10 Years Special

In March 2015 the second album by Super Junior - D&E was released . The subgroup went on tour. In July 2015, Super Junior ended their Super Show 6 tour. With the end of the tour a new studio album called Devil was released . This album is intended to celebrate the band's tenth anniversary.

In August 2015 the subgroup KRY made their comeback with a new single. This subgroup also went on tour for promotion. In October 2015, Kyuhyun released his second album.

2016: Foundation of SJ Label

SM Entertainment founded its own record label for the band, including subgroups, called SJ Label , whereby the members of Super Junior are still under contract with SM Entertainment and all activities of SJ Label are regulated by SM.

In January 2016 Ryeowook released his solo debut album The Little Prince , as well as Yesung released his debut album in April 2016.

2017 – today: PLAY and Super Show 7

On September 27, 2017, Super Juniors website published a countdown that counted down to November 6, the day of Super Juniors twelfth anniversary and the comeback for their eighth album. " SJ Returns - Super Junior Real Comeback Story" started on October 9th on Vlive. On November 6th, Super Junior held a press conference and released their eighth album called PLAY . The title should be a combination of two meanings: 'replay the music' and 'play excitedly'. PLAY contain 10 songs. Black Suit and One More Chance are the two title tracks on this album. Black Suit's music video received over 3 million views on Youtube in the first 24 hours . Siwon did not take part in the promotions. On December 6th, Super Junior released their Japanese single album On and On . This song was composed by Siwon himself. World Tour Super Show 7 started on December 15, 2017.

Sub-groups and solos

In addition to the main group, there are several subgroups that are composed differently. The first sub-group was formed in 2006 from three of the members and is called Super Junior-KRY after the first letters of Kyuhyun, Ryeowook and Yesung. In 2007, Super Junior-Trot (Supers Junior-T) was created, a subgroup dedicated to the Korean pop music Trot . Super Junior-M (SJ-M) was founded in 2008. Two of the eight members are from China and they do not belong to the main group. They do mandopop , from which the name extension is derived. The fourth official sub-group, Super Junior-H , was also founded in 2008 , with the H standing for Happy . In 2011 Heechul founded the project group M&D together with Kim Jung-mo from the band TRAX , whereby M&D stands for “Midnight and Dawn” as well as for their respective hometowns, Miari and Dangae-dong. Her debut single "Close Ur Mouth" was released on July 23, 2011, although it was only sold digitally. Also in 2011 the fifth official sub-group (Super Junior) Donghae & Eunhyuk (also called D&E or DnE ) was founded; the first single "Oppa, Oppa" was released on December 16, 2011.

On May 30, 2013, SM Entertainment announced that Super Junior-M member Henry Lau will release his first solo album "Trap" in June. On October 31, 2014, Super Junior-M member Zhou Mi also released his first solo album entitled "Rewind". At the end of January 2016, Ryeowook released his first solo album, The Little Prince . Yesung's first solo EP was released in April 2016.
