Encore ( English for: "encore" ) is the fifth solo album by the American rapper Eminem . It was released on November 12, 2004 on the labels Shady Records , Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records .

Emergence

As early as 2004 there were rumors that Eminem only wanted to make one album and then withdraw from the music business. The rapper neither denied nor confirmed them, even during the album presentation he kept a low profile. However, the album gives some indications of a career break for the rapper, which eventually took place. His next solo album Relapse was released in 2009.

When Encore came out , Eminem publicly denied being a pill addict. Nevertheless, the rapper went into therapy shortly afterwards, but this was unsuccessful. It wasn't until 2009 that Marshall Mathers admitted to writing Encore while under the influence of prescription drugs.

content

After Eminem had moved away from the shocking lyrics of the two previous albums with The Eminem Show , he continued this development on Encore . On the singles Just Lose It and Ass Like That he makes fun of various celebrities (including Michael Jackson , Madonna , Britney Spears ) in a typically provocative, ironic way . Many songs are full of metaphors and exaggerations ( My 1 st single , Big Weenie ). Rain Man is based on the film of the same name and with Crazy in Love the name says it all. In Evil Deeds, Eminem ironically raps about his bad relationship with his parents.

Besides these songs, there are also a lot of serious tracks. In the song Mosh, for example, the rapper criticizes George W. Bush's politics and calls against his re-election. Like Toy Soldiers processes various beefs with other rappers ( Ja Rule , Benzino , Murder Inc. ) and Mockingbird is a personal song for his daughter Hailie, while Puke is another song against his ex-wife Kim. Never Enough is about the will to go your own way and to master all challenges. In Yellow Brick Road , Eminem delves into his past and his life in Detroit before he became famous. Spend Some Time is aimed at all "sluts" and One Shot 2 Shot tells of an armed robbery on a club.

The last song Encore prepares the fans for Eminem's already announced break in the rap business. At the end of the album, shots can be heard - Eminem apparently first shoots the audience at his concert and then commits suicide . This is also illustrated in the booklet.

The bonus tracks are dedicated to the USA (We as Americans) , love (Love You More) and his rap career to date ( Ricky Ticky Toc ).

Production and samples

The album was mainly produced by Eminem and Dr. Dre . The former shows up for the productions to Yellow Brick Road , Like Toy Soldiers , Puke , My 1 st Single , Spend Some Time , Mockingbird , Crazy In Love and One Shot 2 Shot responsible. Dr. Dre, as executive producer on every Eminem album , produced the tracks Evil Deeds , Rain Man and Big Weenie . In collaboration with Dr. Dre and Mike Elizondo created the beats for Never Enough , Just Lose It and Ass Like That . Mark Batson assisted him with mosh and encore . Many beats are more experimental than on Eminem's previous albums.

A total of five tracks on the album contain samples of songs by other artists. The songs Funkin Lesson by X-Clan and Vocal Planet by Spectrasonic are sampled in Yellow Brick Road . Just Lose It contains elements of U Can not Touch This by MC Hammer , and the Eminem song Without Me and Lose Yourself . Like Toy Soldiers contains a sample of Toy Soldiers by singer Martika in the chorus and also elements from The Hot Rock - Main Title by Quincy Jones . In Crazy in Love , Crazy on You is sampled by Heart , while Spend Some Time samples the song Self Seeking Man by Spooky Tooth .

The standard version's album cover is a continuation of the cover of The Eminem Show . This time Eminem is standing in front of the audience, bowing. In the background there is a half-open blue curtain. The lettering Encore , in which the first E is reversed, is at the top of the picture. However, if you turn the inlay over, you can see that Eminem is holding a pistol behind his back with which he wants to shoot his fans first and then himself.

On the CD itself there is a farewell letter with the wording: “To my family & all my friends, thank you for everything. I will always love you. To my fans, I'm sorry ... Marshall ”.

The audience can be seen from Eminem's perspective on the cover of the Limited Collectors Box. The illustration is black and white, only on the upper right edge of the picture there is a red blood stain. The lettering Encore is in the middle.

Guest Posts

Four songs on the album contain contributions from other rappers. The 50 Cent, which is under contract with Eminem's label Shady Records , is represented on three tracks. He raps on the song Never Enough , the refrain also Nate Dogg is to hear a part. He also appears on the side of Obie Trice and Stat Quo , who were also at Shady Records at the time, in Spend Some Time , and has alongside Eminem's producer Dr. Dre made a guest post on the title track Encore . Eminem's rap crew D12 makes an appearance on One Shot 2 Shot . Eminem's manager Paul Rosenberg also plays a role in Skit Paul .

The album received average to positive reviews. The side Metacritic calculated from 26 Reviews of English-language media is a section of 64%.

  • laut.de rated Encore with three out of a possible five points. The production is highlighted as positive, but a further development of the rapper is questioned:

“In terms of sound, it's not just the single 'Just Lose It' that grooves in the bouncingly clear West Coast flavor Dr. Dres: Expansive electro bass, stripped down but powerful beat and synths that mostly close the gaps with orchestral passages or interjections. […] But no matter who Slim Shady settles with or who he mocks (usual suspects: George Bush, Michael Jackson, The Source and Kim Mathers) - he knows how to stage his issues and aggressions. Somehow the record lacks a second compelling hit. [...] Even if 'Encore' doesn't necessarily reach the next sound level, Eminem complements his hip hop circus with one or the other new show effect. "

- Excerpt from the review by laut.de.
  • The website Rap.de sees the album as a step backwards compared to its predecessor The Eminem Show , but still awards four out of a possible five stars:

Despite all the justified criticism, one should appreciate Em's qualities as a sharp-tongued 'comedian rapper' with an extremely alert mind, even if the implementation of all of this turned out to be a bit flat-chested this time. Well dr. Dre beats no longer sound like they came from the hand of a young god [and] Eminem's Rhyme style was not really reinvented (apart from a number of vocal attempts). […] For me, 'Encore' […] is still one of the better rap albums, and yet, by its own standards, only average. "
