album revival

Untouchable ( English for " untouchable ") is a song written by Marshall Mathers , Tommy Chong , Gaye Delorme and Richard Marin , which was interpreted by the American rapper Eminem . The song is the second single from his ninth studio album Revival and was released on December 8, 2017.

content

The song can be assigned to the socially critical Conscious Rap . Eminem explores everyday racism in the United States , with particular emphasis on recent police violence that has often fallen victim to dark-skinned people.

The song begins with the phrase " Hands up, officer don't shoot ", which was used by the Black Lives Matter movement during protests after the death of Michael Brown by a police officer. In the first verse, Eminem raps from the point of view of a racist policeman who stops a black man in the car and searches him for drugs based on his skin color ( racial profiling ). The policeman threatens to shoot him if there is a chase and then make it look like self - defense . He does not question his actions because he is only doing his job for the good of the United States. In the chorus, the “white man” is ironically referred to as a “rock star” and “inviolable”. The second verse is initially still rapped from the point of view of the white policeman. He announced that he wanted to arrest the colored man, although he did not have to justify himself because he was superior to him. If necessary, he would also use his weapon to clear the streets of criminal minorities. Now Eminem changes perspective and raps from his point of view: He is worried that the past will return, in which African Americans were discriminated against.

After another chorus, the beat changes and Eminem raps the last verse, which is significantly longer than the previous ones. He wonders if the life of a white man is worth more than that of a black person in general. He disses the South African rap group Die Antwoord , whose members painted themselves black in the 2012 music video for the song Fatty Boom Boom , as it used to be in minstrel shows . Eminem shows how difficult it is to escape from the ghettos by means of legal work, since poverty leads to crime and people with a previous conviction are rarely hired. The use of the Black Lives Matter movement was also overshadowed by violent attacks on police officers , which is why there was no improvement in the situation in sight. On the other hand, many white police officers have prejudices against black people because they have no black acquaintances themselves. Therefore, more black civil servants should be deployed in African-American neighborhoods. At the same time he criticizes the segregation of the different races into individual residential areas, which would be promoted by the state. Large sections of society, especially Republicans , would also favor white people in many positions and view African Americans in general as poorer and more criminal. Then Eminem goes back to the police violence and denounces that many police officers were later acquitted in court despite overwhelming evidence, such as in the Rodney King case. He also supports the protests against racism in the National Football League . The United States as a supposed "land of the free" continues to be a racist place that was built by slaves .

production

The instrumental of the song consists of two different beats that change after 2:47 minutes. It was produced by Eminem himself in collaboration with music producers Mark Batson, Emile Haynie and Mr. Porter . They used a sample of Earache My Eye by the comedy duo Cheech and Chong in the chorus . In addition, elements of the song Born to Roll by the rap group Masta Ace Incorporated are included.
