Die Antwoord ( Afrikaans for The Answer ) is a South African rap rave band from Cape Town .

Act

The Antwoord consists of the members Ninja (rap / vocals), Yolandi Visser (rap / vocals) and DJ Hi-Tek (beats / DJing). Frontman Ninja ( Watkin Tudor Jones ) had been a well-known artist, musician and producer in South Africa since the 90s and changed his stage characters several times in the past. Among other things, he worked under the pseudonym Max Normal at the group MaxNormal.TV (formerly Max Normal ) and as Waddy Jones at The Constructus Corporation . DJ Hi-Tek is generally referred to as the third member of the group, but there are two people who can be considered as DJ Hi-Tek, but maybe there is no specific person. The group mixes musical elements of rap , drum & bass and electro with texts between social criticism and satire , written in Afrikaans , Xhosa and English. Their debut album $ O $ was released on the band's website in 2009. Supporting artists included Jack Parow, Jaak Paarl (aka Jaak), Knoffel (aka Garlic Brown), Scallywag and Isaac Mutant.

Her music combines elements of different South African cultures and tells, among other things, from the perspective of the local lower class from the socially disadvantaged areas of the South African suburbs. The group calls their music Zef , which in Afrikaans colloquially means something like “backwoodsmen” or “prolet”. Zef can be seen as a philosophy of life that celebrates the poor and the ugly and preaches radical constructivism (e.g. in the form of the message “You can achieve anything you want” (see e.g. the song Enter The Ninja ) )

After the video Zef-Side caused a sensation on blogs and social networks on the Internet, the group produced the video Enter the Ninja together with director Rob Malpage , which became an even bigger viral hit in early 2010 with many clicks on YouTube . This video also features the South African artist and DJ Leon Botha , who died in 2011 and who suffered from progeria . The group performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the USA.

Ninja and ¥ o-Landi Vi $$ er, 2012

According to a video justification by Ninja on YouTube for using the word fagot (English for "fagot") in their song Fok julle naaiers (Afrikaans for fuck you fuckers ), he said he was not homophobic . The entire text is a modified quote from a press conference by boxer Mike Tyson . In addition, DJ Hi-Tek, who is one of his best friends, is homosexual. The video was in response to complaints from Interscope Records. They didn't like the fact that DJ Hi-Tek used the word fagot . In addition, the album was a bit too aggressive for them anyway, which is why they wanted to revise it again. Ultimately, Die Antwoord ended the business relationship with the label. Her album Ten $ ion , released in 2012, was released under her own label ZEFRECORDZ . When they first uploaded the video for the single Fok julle naaiers to YouTube, it was blocked at Intercom's behest. They immediately posted it on Vimeo, and since the video was published by ZEFRECORDZ and not by Interscope, YouTube approved the video again.

Ninja and ¥ o-Landi played the leading roles in Harmony Korine's short film Umshini Wam in 2010 . In 2014 they shot the science fiction film Chappie with the South African director Neill Blomkamp .

In summer 2011 they accompanied the band Linkin Park as the opening act for the Oberurseler Hessentag as part of the “Project Revolution: A Thousand Suns” world tour. In 2012, 2015 and 2017 she performed at the Southside Festival in Neuhausen ob Eck and at the Hurricane Festival in Scheeßel.

Since 2015 there has been a collaboration between Ninja and ¥ o-Landi with the Australian designer Ashley Wood . So far, this has resulted in a series of designer toys and a series of comics entitled Fuck Everyone * .

After the release of the albums Donker Mag (2014) and Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid (2016), the band announced in 2017 that, as planned when the group was founded, they would split up after the release of the fifth album, and released the single Love drug . The album House of Zef was released on the internet on March 16, 2020.

In 2019, Die Antwoord was dropped from the line-up of the Louder Than Life music festivals in Kentucky and Life Is Beautiful in Las Vegas after a seven-year-old video was released of the band chatting with Hercules And Love Affair front man Andy Butler argues and gets violent towards him. According to the band, the background was sexual innuendos against Visser, who expresses herself homophobically against Butler in the video . In the same year, the Australian rapper Zheani made other allegations of blackmail and sexual assault against ninja.
