The 51st Hessentag took place from June 10th to 19th, 2011 in Oberursel (Taunus) . A total of 1,375,000 visitors were counted at the events, which was a record number of visitors for Hessentag. Charmaine Weisenbach and Christian Peter formed the Hessentag couple and the motto was Oberursel, the gate to the Taunus invites you to join the Hessenfest!

background

Since 1961 , Hessentage has been held in different parts of the state , initiated by the state government and carried out together with the respective municipalities. These are major events that attract national attention, have a budget of millions and each attract hundreds of thousands of visitors.

In January 2007, Oberursel (Taunus) was awarded the contract for the Hessentag 2011. This was preceded by an application that was unanimously approved by the city council. The city counted on a deficit of a maximum of three million euros. However, the final accounts showed a deficit of 6 million euros, as Mayor Hans-Georg Brum (SPD) admitted in February 2011.

preparation

Oberursel, Hessentag 2011

As in the other Hessentag cities, extensive investments in the city's infrastructure were necessary in the run-up to the Hessentag . In Oberursel, the following measures were implemented by various organizations:

  • the total renovation of Hohemarkstrasse ,
  • the renovation of the listed station and the redesign of the station forecourt as well as the construction of an underpass to enable the barrier-free route between Bommersheim and the city center,
  • the renovation of all metro stations in the city and
  • the new building of the Taunus information center .

When planning the areas that will be used directly by the Hessentag, the aspect of sustainability was in the foreground. The redesign of the Maasgrund city park and the green space on Adenauerallee should also enhance the cityscape afterwards. The felling of all old and only partially sick chestnuts and the replanting of a species resistant to the horse chestnut miner moth on Adenauerallee met with criticism in the city. The festival area, which is located on the street An den Drei Hasen , was to be used as a 15 hectare extension of the adjacent industrial area after the Hessentag. Construction began in autumn 2011.

With the start of the Hessentag, other major projects were completed, such as the construction of the Oberursel grammar school for 47 million euros by the Hochtaunus district , and the renovation of the churches of St. Ursula and Christ Church .

The Sandburg Eppstein, a model of the Eppstein Castle made of sand, was less durable . According to the original plans, the sand castle was to be demolished immediately after the Hessentag. The demolition was postponed until autumn and took place on October 29th.

Incidents

Impact airship Spirit of Safety on the day of the accident over Oberursel

The Spirit of Safety airship , which is licensed in Great Britain and which carried out a commercial flight over the Hessentag site on June 12, crashed on approach to Reichelsheim , killing the 52-year-old Australian pilot. On landing, the tank tore open and the leaking gasoline ignited. Three journalists who were also on board were able to save themselves.

The free “Just White” party hosted by the FFH radio station on June 12th attracted significantly more guests than expected. The rush was larger than the capacity of the open-air area, so that the security forces had to block access. There was jostling and some visitors tried to climb over the fences.

Others

During the Hessentag 2011, the AFN's medium-wave transmitter Weißkirchen was switched off for EMC reasons . As a replacement for this transmitter, a makeshift transmitter with a sliding mast was set up in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim. After the end of the Hessentag, the AFN transmitter went back into operation.
