The Hessentag 1976 took place from June 5th to 13th, 1976 in Bensheim . It was opened by the then Prime Minister of Hesse, Albert Osswald . The Hessentag couple formed the siblings Jutta and Rolf Schmidt.

During this period 150 events with around 345,000 visitors took place. The most important venues were the state exhibition on the Berliner Ring, the amusement park on Eifelstrasse, the event stage on the bathing lake and the Weiherhaus stadium . On the occasion of the 200th birthday of the USA , the then ambassador of the USA in Germany, Martin J. Hillenbrand , opened an exhibition on the subject of Hesse and the American Revolution in 1776 .

The pageant with the motto "We Hessen" comprised 379 train numbers and lasted over four hours.

Before the festive days, Bensheim benefited primarily from state grants for the renovation of large parts of the old town . Most of the half-timbered façades that can be found in the old town today were uncovered in preparation for the national festival. The renovation of the Walderdorffer Hof , one of the oldest half-timbered buildings in southern Germany, and the construction of the community center also took place before the Hessentag.

Bensheim was again the host of the Hessentag in 2014 .
