Hessentag 1987

The Hessentag 1987 took place from June 6th to 14th, 1987 in the small town of Melsungen in North Hesse .

The Hessentag was opened by Prime Minister Walter Wallmann ( CDU ) and the then mayor Erhart Appell. It was the first Hessentag opened by a CDU Prime Minister. The Hessentag couple were Beate Apel and Volker Salzmann.

Before Melsungen was awarded the contract for the Hessentag, the city applied for the organization several times without success. Before the Hessentag, the historic half-timbered old town was completely renovated, streets and squares were redesigned and new residential and commercial areas were created.

The program included u. a. a kite festival, a balloon competition and a question time where citizens could ask questions to politicians. The focal points of the Hessentag were the fairground on the sand and the city center, which has since been used as a pedestrian zone . Around 150,000 spectators saw the pageant with 312 train numbers. A total of around 400,000 visitors were counted over the 9 days.
