Oberursel high school

The Oberursel (GO) grammar school is a grammar school in Oberursel (Taunus) in the Hochtaunus district . The high school has a bilingual branch and has an emphasis on music . The catchment area mainly includes Oberursel and its districts as well as Oberhöchstadt (district of Kronberg im Taunus ), Steinbach and Schmitten . The school turned 100 on February 25, 2013.

history

A Latin school had existed in Oberursel since the Reformation . After this ceased operations in 1821, there was only one elementary school in Oberursel until 1862 . In 1862 a secondary school was opened in Schulstrasse 22, the "Realbauernhof", which was merged with the primary school to form the United Primary and Secondary School by a ministerial decree of August 7, 1876 . The attempts by the city of Oberursel to set up a Realprogymnasium were not approved by the ministry because the city's financial contribution was too low. The suggestion to allow girls to enter secondary school in 1885 also failed. In addition to the general ban on co-education , reference was made to the existing secondary school for girls . In October 1910 a six-class secondary school was opened, which was recognized as an upper secondary school in 1916 .

In 1911, the city of Oberursel announced an architecture competition for a new school building, which was won by the Frankfurt architect Franz Thyriot . On February 25, 1913, the school building, which offered space for 290 students in nine classes, was officially opened. On September 12, 1916, the school was recognized as an upper secondary school by the ministry. On April 1, 1916, the girls' higher school had already been recognized as a lyceum . In 1931 the lyceum was closed and boys and girls were taught together. In 1936 the school was named Oberrealschule für Jungs , although it was still taught in co-education.

After the Second World War , the school was reopened as a secondary school. Since 1956 it has been called "Oberursel Gymnasium".

On January 1, 1970, the school administration passed from the city of Oberursel to the Obertaunuskreis . The nationwide education discussion as a result of the educational reform concept of the 68 movement did not stop at Oberursel either: the school was converted into a comprehensive school in 1972 . Due to the resistance of the CDU in the district council, only an additive comprehensive school was set up, in which the individual school types continued to exist under one roof. After the state elections in Hesse in 1987 , the Union enforced the School Freedom Act. The comprehensive school was then split up in 1988: the main and secondary school branches were relocated to the Erich Kästner School 500 meters away, and the grammar school got its old name back.

Lessons offered

The Oberursel grammar school focuses on musical and bilingual education . From the fifth grade on, special string and wind classes are offered in which each student plays an instrument that is regularly rehearsed in school. There are also singing classes in which dealing with the voice is essential.

As part of the language lessons in Oberursel, history and geography lessons are sometimes offered in English . Science classes are currently offered in English in the subject of biology. The Abitur can also be taken bilingually in biology. Mathematics and physics are also offered bilingual for a limited number of hours in the upper level . Specialist courses in French , Spanish , Latin and German complete the range of languages.

The students at the Oberursel grammar school are also particularly strong in mathematics : for example, they successfully take part in many mathematics competitions. A math meeting is offered in the afternoon for the intermediate level. In addition, there is support for groups of participants in the Jugend forscht competition .

The school has more than five fully equipped computer rooms, which also make it possible to create presentations in large groups. In addition, computer courses are held every year for pupils in grades five to eight which, in addition to the most important basic knowledge of the Microsoft Office package, also teach them advanced skills such as Internet research and website programming. It is worth noting that this course is organized and planned solely by students.

In addition, many working groups (AG) are offered at the Oberursel grammar school . These include, for example, the Chronik AG, which publishes a school chronicle every year, the Natural Science AG for the sixth grade, the Theater AG for the upper grades and the Musical AG for all classes.

There is also a school medical service at the Oberursel grammar school, which takes care of injured classmates in everyday school life and at school events. This school medical service is part of the cooperation between the school medical services in the Hochtaunus district.

Events

Every year there are two big concerts (one each in winter and one in summer) by the symphony orchestra, the choirs and the string, wind and choir classes. The school's musical group has performed a musical every year since 1989. The theater group “Irre-Parabel”, founded in 1988, regularly performs self-made and third-party productions. In addition, the student council of the Oberursel grammar school is involved in various campaigns for aid projects, such as for the partner school in Colombia or for non-profit associations. Every year the courtyard festival (school festival) takes place, during which the net proceeds are donated in full to the Colombian social project of the Oberursel grammar school. Schoolchildren who have previously looked for sponsors run the charity run on the sports field for a good cause.

Expansion as part of the economic stimulus package

Listed old building

As part of the economic pact II , the Hochtaunuskreis is investing more than 57 million euros (of which 20 million euros come from the funds of the economic pact) in the expansion of the Oberursel high school. For the school year 2011/2012 two extensions were completed, which were occupied by grades 5 and 6. In the second half of the year (winter 2011/2012) the three-part sports hall, which is located under the schoolyard, was also put into operation. The rest of the new building was used after the 2012 summer vacation.

building

The seven buildings are denoted by the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G and S. Building A is the listed old building with the former media library and cafeteria, B is the so-called "swimming pool building" with new extensions, and C is a new wing with classrooms. Building D houses the music rooms, the new media library and the all-day area. The large auditorium, which is used as a cafeteria during school days, is located in Building E, and the specialist rooms for natural sciences, which are specially equipped for experiments, are in F. G is the administration building and S is the triple underground sports hall. All buildings are connected by bridges.
