Monika Berberich
Monika Berberich (born October 23, 1942 in Oberursel ) is a former German terrorist and founding member of the Red Army Fraction terrorist organization (RAF). She was involved in the liberation of Andreas Baader and served a prison sentence from 1970 to 1988.
Life
Monika Berberich studied law in Frankfurt and West Berlin . In 1965 she was imprisoned in Prague for four months for helping to escape. In 1970 she worked for Horst Mahler's law firm and, like Mahler, became a member of the RAF. On May 14, 1970 she took part in the liberation of Andreas Baader . Berberich took part in military training in a Palestinian desert camp in Jordan in the summer of 1970 . After her return, she supported the logistical development of the RAF and was involved in several bank robberies.
On October 8, 1970, the police succeeded in arresting her together with Horst Mahler, Irene Goergens , Ingrid Schubert and Brigitte Asdonk in Berlin. She was sentenced to twelve years in prison for supporting a criminal organization and for participating in the liberation of Baader. On July 7, 1976, she escaped from the Lehrter Strasse women's prison in Berlin. When she was caught again after July 21, she was sentenced to another four years in prison. Berberich was released on March 18, 1988. In numerous interviews, Berberich showed no distance from her deeds. She never distanced herself from the RAF. A BBC interview from 1995, in which she called the Federal Republic of Germany a “ fascist state”, became particularly well known .
Today Monika Berberich lives in Frankfurt am Main and works as an author for various radical left publications.
