Nino Franchina

Nino Franchina (born June 25, 1912 in Palmanova , Province of Udine , Italy , † 1987 in Rome ) was an Italian sculptor . He is one of the most important representatives of modern art after the Second World War .

Nino Franchina was the child of an old Sicilian family. He graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Palermo in 1934 . In 1936 he exhibited together with three other Sicilian artists, Renato Guttuso , Giovanni Barbera and Lia Pasqualino , for the first time in the Galleria Il Milione in Milan . The four founded the artist group “ Gruppo dei Quattro ”.

In 1939 he married Gina, the daughter of the painter Gino Severini in Rome . Nino Franchina took part in the III. Rome Quadrennial. In 1943 he had his first solo exhibition in the Galleria Minima in Rome. In 1947 Franchina became a member of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti .

In 1948 he took part in the XXIV  Venice Biennale with the other artists from the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti . He also exhibited at the Venice Biennials in 1952, 1958, 1966 and 1972. He was a participant in the 1st Alexandria Biennale in Egypt , the VII  Quadriennale in Rome , the IV São Paulo Biennale in 1957  and the documenta II in Kassel in 1959 .

In 1972 he took part in the IX. Exposition Internationale de Sculpture Contemporaine at the Musée Rodin in Paris . His last work was on the XI. Rome Quadriennial shown, one year before his death in 1987, also in Rome.
