Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival , also known as Coachella , is a music festival based in Indio in the Coachella Valley , California . It has been held annually since 1999 and is one of the largest festivals in the world. Since 2012, the entire three-day program has been repeated in the following week with the same artists. In addition to performances by alternative rock , hip-hop and electronica artists, installations and sculptures are presented.
In 2007 the festival took place on five main and several smaller stages. The hippie- inspired outfits are typical of the festival . The fashion manufacturer H&M launched its own clothing line for the first time in 2015. The organizers value recycling and sustainability . There are several eco-initiatives, such as garbage cans elaborately designed by artists and a “clean-up company”.

As early as 1993, Tool and Pearl Jam were the first rock bands to play on the grounds of the Empire Polo Club . The first festival took place on October 9th and 10th, 1999. Around 25,000 visitors saw performances by bands such as Beck , The Chemical Brothers , Morrissey and Rage Against the Machine . In 2000 there was no festival due to financial problems of the organizers. A year later, the event was held on April 28th to cut the budget and avoid the heat of summer. As headliner was Jane's Addiction are obtained which reunited for the festival. Furthermore occurred among other Fatboy Slim , Iggy Pop , Sigur Rós , The Chemical Brothers, K & D , Paul Oakenfold , Weezer and Tricky on. In 2002, Siouxsie and the Banshees , Björk and Oasis played two days , a year later Red Hot Chili Peppers , Beastie Boys and The Stooges performed with Iggy Pop as Iggy and the Stooges.
In 2004 all 50,000 tickets were sold for the first time. In addition to other Pixies , Radiohead , Kraftwerk and The Cure performed on two days . The 2007 edition of the festival took place over three days. In addition to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Björk, the reunited band Rage Against the Machine played in front of 100,000 spectators. The ninth Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival took place from April 25 to 27, 2008, including Prince , Tegan and Sara , Portishead , Kraftwerk, Death Cab for Cutie , Roger Waters , Jack Johnson and Fatboy Slim .
The tenth anniversary of the festival began on April 17th and ended on April 19th, 2009. Among the more than 130 guests in the lineup were a. Paul McCartney , The Ting Tings , Billy Talent , James Morrison , The Chemical Brothers, The Killers , Joss Stone , Groove Armada , Public Enemy as well as The Cure and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs . In 2012 Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre projected a lifelike hologram of Tupac Shakur , who died in 1996 , to which Hail Mary and 2 of Americaz Most Wanted were played. At the 2016 festival, Guns N 'Roses (with Axl Rose , Slash and Duff McKagan ) performed for the first time in a reunion on April 16 and 23 .
In April 2018, Beyoncé became the first black musician to take on the headline act at the festival. In a show with around 100 black musicians, singers and dancers, she presented her own musical development in relation to the history of black music in the USA and also addressed racist and sexist structures. A documentary entitled Homecoming , which can be seen on Netflix, describes the genesis, the considerations for the show and its preparation .
