Jack Johnson (musician)
Jack Hody Johnson (born May 18, 1975 in Oahu , Hawaii ) is an American surfer , (surf) film director and singer-songwriter .
Life
Johnson learned to surf as a five-year-old and at 17 was the youngest finals competitor in the Pipe Trials , a world-famous surfing event. Before he finished high school , he had a professional contract with Quiksilver . Until his graduation in 1993 he was a student at Kahuku High School on the north coast of the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The " Northshore " with its beaches is the popular meeting place for surfers on the island chain. The fun of surfing was absolutely in the foreground for him at a young age. After a long break from injury, during which he played a lot of guitar, he ended his professional career as a surfer in order not to turn the attitude to life "surfing" into a profit-oriented competitive sport. As an environmental activist for the One Percent for the Planet organization , he allows at least one percent of his profits to flow into ecological projects. He lives vegetarian.
Movies
He attended as a film student, the University of California in California's Santa Barbara . He participated in the surf films September Sessions , Thicker than Water and A Brokedown Melody and Sprout , which appeared under the record label The Moonshine Conspiracy . In 2004 the label was renamed Woodshed Films . Woodshed films are known for their relaxed atmosphere, jazzy music and first-class recordings with 16 mm cameras. Unlike many other surf films, Woodshed films are not about big wave surfing, but about everyday surfing and life around them. Johnson is friends with surf professionals like Kelly Slater , Rob Machado and Donavon Frankenreiter .
music
His first steps as a musician began with learning to play the guitar at the age of twelve, but for a long time he only pursued it as a hobby.
The self-produced films had to be accompanied by music, and to keep costs down, he used self-written songs. From now on he quickly became a permanent musical figure in the surfing scene. Garrett Dutton, better known as G.Love , frontman of from Philadelphia coming R & B - Hip-Hop -Formation G. Love & Special Sauce and even avid surfer, took notice of Johnson and cleared the piece Rodeo Clowns in 1999 a place on the album Philadelphonic a. Through word of mouth and "tape-to-tape" propaganda, Johnson's popularity increased, after which his debut Brushfire Fairytales appeared in 2001 .
The success made it possible for him to set up his own studio in Hawaii (The Mango Tree) and his own record label ( Brushfire Records ). He has already released four albums since 2002, and in 2002 he was also represented in the US charts with the song Flake . Ben Stiller played a leading role in the video for the title Taylor (2004) . According to his own information, Johnson was musically influenced by the Beatles , Jimi Hendrix , Bob Dylan , Ben Harper , Radiohead , Neil Young , Bob Marley , Otis Redding, etc. In an interview in Surfers, the european soul magazine (issue 01/03) he said that he used to play in a punk band and still listens to punk rock today.
“ My first band was a punk band - but you should have heard that ... awful! We loved the pogen , but you couldn't call it music. Still, I couldn't make up my mind. I still listen to punk and Bob Marley. "
In 2005 he recorded a revised version of his song Gone (new: Gone Going ) with The Black Eyed Peas . After a long world tour in 2008, Johnson released the most famous hits of his studio albums on the live double CD En Concert in 2009 . His friend and well-known filmmaker Emmet Malloy released a DVD with the same title for the tour. Johnson plans to donate part of the proceeds to two charitable organizations that deal with environmental problems in Hawaii. His sixth studio album, To the Sea , was released in early June 2010 .
