Kelly Slater
Robert Kelly Slater (born February 11, 1972 in Cocoa Beach , Florida ) is an American professional surfer and eleven-time world champion in professional surfing with the ASP .
biography
Slater grew up in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where he still lives. He has two brothers and a daughter (born 1996). Since Slater grew up close to the sea, he started surfing when he was 5 years old. At the age of 10 he won all competitions in his age group on the east coast. From the age of 12 he also began to win international youth competitions.
Athletic career
Slater started his professional career in 1990 on the ASP World Tour . As early as 1992 he won his first contest with the Rip Curl Pro in France and with a victory at the legendary Pipeline in Hawaii, he is the youngest surfer to date, the world championship. With five titles in a row, Slater dominated the professional surfing scene from 1994 to 1998. After that, he announced his resignation because he had achieved everything and his own ambition was destroying him. In the following years he traveled around the world and made alternative surf films, among other things. In the early 2000s, his father developed cancer; Slater delayed his comeback to deal with this one.
In 2003, the year of his comeback, he lost the title to Andy Irons in the very last contest of the season , which was also his worst defeat. The Andy Irons rivalry is considered one of the most exciting in surfing history. In 2005 Kelly Slater had worked her way up to old form and won his seventh title. He secured his eighth title early on October 13, 2006 at the contest in Mundaka . He also won the ninth title at the contest in Mundaka on October 3, 2008. The American has won more world championships than any surfer before. In 2010 Slater was able to secure his 10th world championship title in the ninth of a total of ten events in the ASP World Tour. He achieved this with a brilliant victory (18.87 out of a maximum of 20 possible points) in the quarter-finals of the event in Puerto Rico . His lead over his biggest competitor Jordy Smith could not be made up. His eleventh and so far last victory in 2011 made him the oldest winner of the world championship to date. So he is both the youngest and the oldest to ever win the title.
He won the world title in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011. He also won the Triple Crown of Surfing title in 1995, 1998 and 2019 at the age of 47 .
Trivia
Slater was in a relationship with Pamela Anderson , Gisele Bündchen and Cameron Diaz and became even better known outside of the surfing scene.

A computer game is named after him and he is a playable character in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 , but he appears with a surfboard. Kelly Slater had multi-million dollar advertising deals; his main sponsor was Quiksilver from 1990 to 2013 , in which he held 3% of the shares. In March 2013, Kelly Slater and Quiksilver split after starting his own clothing company Outerknown. In addition, he signed a contract with Kering . Its main sponsor at the time, Volcom, belonged to this group. Slater surfs boards from Firewire, where he sells his own boards under Slater Designs. It also operates with the Kelly Slater Wave Company a Wave Pool in Lemoore , California. Only selected surfers get the opportunity to ride this man-made wave.
