Arnual (also Arnoald , Latin Arnualdus ) is a Catholic saint. He was Bishop of Metz from 601 to 609 . His feast day is October 9th .

The name "Arnoald" comes from Old High German and means "waving like an eagle". Arnual is considered the founder of the monastery in the village of Merkingen , which was later renamed St. Arnual and is now a district of Saarbrücken .

Arnual married his wife Oda around 584, with whom he had two children. He had a desire to become a priest, and the couple separated, Oda entered a monastery. Arnual became bishop of Metz in 601, but renounced the bishop's seat in 609 and became a hermit . In the same year he founded a clerical community in Merkingen, today's St. Arnual. According to tradition, Arnual received the village of Merkingen from the Merovingian king Theudebert II as a gift. From this monastery he evangelized the areas around what is now Saarbrücken. He is also said to be buried in St. Arnual, excavations between 1989 and 1995 revealed an important Merovingian burial site in the crossing of the church, towards which the other tombs of the time are oriented.
