Hans-Walter Herrmann (born March 8, 1930 in Dudweiler ) is a German historian and archivist . He has written numerous articles on Saarland's regional history and is considered an outstanding regional and state historian of the Saarland .

Life

During the first evacuation of Saarbrücken after the beginning of the Second World War , Hans-Walter Herrmann attended the Realgymnasium Wöhlerschule in Frankfurt am Main from 1940 , then during the following war years the Hindenburg School in Saarbrücken and at the time of the second evacuation towards the end of the war the Philipp Lenard School in Heidelberg . After attending the upper secondary school for boys, he obtained his Abitur in Saarbrücken. This was followed from 1950 to 1956 by studying history , German , geography and art history at the universities in Saarbrücken and Bonn and at the École nationale des chartes (University for document research) in Paris . In 1956 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the history of the county of Saar Werden . This was followed by training as a senior archive service at the Bavarian Archive School in Munich from 1957 to 1960 . In April 1960 he passed the state examination for archive assessors and in May 1960 entered the higher archive service in Saarland. From 1961 until his retirement in 1995, Hans-Walter Herrmann headed the Saarland Archives in Saarbrücken. Most recently he had the rank of ministerial councilor .

Research and Teaching

Since 1968, Hans-Walter Herrmann has accepted teaching assignments in Saarland's regional history , historical auxiliary sciences and archival studies. In 1983 he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Saarland . His extensive publications relate mainly to the regional history of the Saarland, Lorraine and the Palatinate with an emphasis on the territorial history of the Middle Ages and the early modern period up to the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806. The work also extends to local and local history, Cultural , social and economic history and a summary of regional history.

Honorary positions

Hans-Walter Herrmann holds numerous honorary positions at institutions and associations active in regional history. From 1960 to 1999 he was managing director of the Commission for Saarland State History and Folk Research, 1984 to 2005 Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Regional Studies in Saarland , 1961 to 1974 editor of the journal for the history of the Saar region , 1980 to 1988 member of the Saarland State Monument Council and 1988 until 1995 German representative in the executive committee of the International Archives Council . Hans-Walter Herrmann is involved in the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland and is an honorary member of the Association for Palatinate Church History.

Hans-Walter Herrmann lives in Riegelsberg . His two sons Hans-Georg and Hans-Christian Herrmann (* 1964) attended the Ludwigsgymnasium and passed the Abitur in 1978 and 1984 respectively. Hans-Christian Herrmann received his doctorate in 1995 with a thesis on social policy and the role of the trade unions in Saarland in 1945 –1955 and emerges with a wide selection of articles on archival science and on Saarbrücken's urban and cultural history. Hans-Christian Herrmann has headed the Saarbrücken City Archives since 2010.
