Georg Wilhelm Sante

Georg Wilhelm Sante (born October 3, 1896 in Hildesheim , † March 11, 1984 in Wiesbaden ) was a German historian and archivist .

Life

Born the son of a district court director, Sante first attended grammar school in Elberfeld (1908–1914), where he also passed the Abitur. In World War I he fought on the Western Front and was released as a lieutenant in the reserve . He then studied history and art history in Münster , Munich and Bonn . In 1923 he received his doctorate from the University of Bonn with a thesis on Johann Wilhelm's policy on the Electoral Palatinate and the peace treaties in Utrecht, Rastatt and Baden . After completing his doctorate, he studied law in Munich. At the same time, Sante worked as a historian and scholarship holder for the emergency community of German science . In 1927/28 he completed his archivist training at the Prussian Institute for Archival Science in Berlin-Dahlem and, after passing the exam, was assigned to the Prussian State Archives in Wiesbaden as a research assistant. After a delegation to the Saarbrücken City Archives (1929–1935) and an assignment as a consultant for archival protection in Belgium and northern France (1940–1944), he made a career in Wiesbaden and in 1947 was entrusted with the management of the State Archives - renamed Main State Archives Wiesbaden  . At the same time he was appointed archivist in the Hessian Ministry of Culture .

Sante founded the nationwide conference of archivists (1953), was treasurer (1947–1957) and chairman (1957–1961) of the Association of German Archivists . Even after his retirement (1961) he still held numerous offices and functions. So until 1968 he headed the entire association of German history and antiquity associations .
