The Hessian Main State Archive Wiesbaden is a department of the Hessian State Archives and is located in the state capital Wiesbaden . In addition to the Hessian State Archive in Darmstadt and the Hessian State Archive in Marburg, it serves as a regional archive and also has the task of the central archive for the Hessian constitutional bodies , ministries and other institutions with nationwide responsibility.

history
The Hessian main state archive goes back to the archives of the Nassau counties and principalities. With the entry of the Princes of Nassau-Usingen and Nassau-Weilburg to the Rhenish Confederation , the Duchy of Nassau was created in 1806 with the capital Wiesbaden. The change in the rule of law required a fundamental reorganization of the archive landscape. The old government archive of the Nassau-Usingen line in Idstein Castle was given the function of the ducal central archive, which contained the historical archive holdings of the former principalities of Nassau-Idstein and Nassau-Usingen. Field offices in Weilburg , Dillenburg and Hachenburg were subordinate to him . The archives of the more than 20 ecclesiastical and secular territories that were dissolved in 1803 at the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and assigned to the Nassau principalities also flowed into the new central archive .
The annexation of the Duchy of Nassau by Prussia after the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 led to another administrative reorganization. Together with the formerly Free City of Frankfurt , the Prussian administrative district of Wiesbaden grew. In order to do justice to the strong growth in archive material, the Prussian archive administration built a new archive building in Mainzer Straße in Wiesbaden in 1881. This archive building, which was expanded to include a magazine building in 1908/1909, survived the Second World War largely unscathed and became one of the three Hessian state archives after the state of Hesse was founded in 1945. It remained regionally responsible for the Wiesbaden administrative region. Even after its dissolution in 1968, the main state archive still looks after the archives of the subordinate state agencies from its former area. In addition, after the establishment of the State of Hesse, the Wiesbaden State Archive was given the function of an archive for the central authorities and institutions of the State - from which the name Main State Archive is derived.

Newcomers
The Hessian Main State Archives have two responsibilities:
- He is responsible for taking over the historically significant documents of the Hessian ministries as well as all authorities, courts and state institutions with responsibility for the entire state of Hesse. In this function, it also maintains an interim archive for written material that is still subject to the official retention period .
- As a regional archive, it is - like the two other Hessian state archives in Marburg and Darmstadt - responsible for the archives of the subordinate state offices in the independent cities of Frankfurt am Main and Wiesbaden as well as the districts of Hochtaunuskreis , Lahn-Dill-Kreis , Limburg-Weilburg , Main -Kinzig-Kreis , Main-Taunus-Kreis and Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis .
In addition to the archives from the registries of state administrations and church institutions, documents of non-state origin, for example from parties and associations, as well as the bequests of scientists, persons of contemporary history and politicians' bequests, such as those of Karl Geiler , Erwin Stein and Heinrich Tröger, are also kept.

The Hessian Main State Archive is currently storing holdings of
- 65,004 documents from the years 910 to approx. 1850,
- approximately 50 kilometers of shelving, filing and official records , Salbücher , logs , invoices and cadastre (the 15th century)
- approx. 196,000 cards , plans and posters ,
- approx. 261,000 images and photographs and
- Library with over 100,000 volumes.
More functions
Other central areas of responsibility for the Hessian State Archive are also located in the building of the Hessian Main State Archive in Wiesbaden:
- the filming of historically valuable Hessian archives on behalf of the federal government ;
- Leadership in the development and operation of modern archive information technology, such as the Arcinsys archive information system;
- Digitales Archiv Hessen, the digital archive material, so-called born digitals , takes on (since the end of 2009)
- Central press and public relations work (publication of the archive news from Hesse , the activities of the Hessian State Archives as well as maintenance of the central homepage of the State Archives)
The building
The takeover of archive and filing material from the dissolved authorities in the post-war period and the receipt of new documents from the highest state authorities quickly depleted the magazine capacity. The new building erected between 1981 and 1985 in Mosbacher Strasse in Wiesbaden reflects the current state of archival technology and is still today an exemplary purpose-built archive building with a capacity of around 70 km of archive material. The old archive building from the 19th century on Mainzer Straße was demolished after the move.
