Friedrich Traugott Friedemann was the son of the white baker Gottlob Traugott Friedmann (born August 22, 1752 in Stolpen; † November 20, 1820 in Stolpen) and his wife Christine Dorothea nee Schroth (born September 15, 1763; † September 1, 1837 in Stolpen) . He attended the higher middle school in Dresden and on November 23, 1805 moved to the St. Afra high school in Meißen . On September 17, 1810, he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg to study theology , philosophy , history and linguistics . Here Christian August Lobeck became his formative teacher. He completed his studies on October 17, 1812 with a doctorate in philosophy (Dr. phil.).

In 1813 Friedemann became vice principal of the grammar school in Zwickau . On March 17, 1817, Vice-Rector at the Wittenberg Gymnasium , and after Franz Spitzner had been transferred to Erfurt, Friedmann took over the Rector's Office on July 8, 1820. After he had given his farewell speech on November 27, 1823, he entered the rectorate of the Catharineum grammar school in Braunschweig with the speech on January 7, 1824 .

As soon as he started, he expressly opposed reform efforts in the direction of a secondary school. When a private, technically oriented secondary  school was founded in 1825  (the predecessor of today's  Neue Oberschule ), which immediately attracted a large number of more than 60 students, the traditional secondary schools had to fear for their existence. A hastily convened school commission led to the consolidation of the grammar schools into a comprehensive grammar school at Easter 1828 and also appointed Friedemann to be the director of the general college consisting of upper, secondary and secondary grammar schools.

He received the title of professor and left Braunschweig in a dispute, including with Prof. Petri from the Collegium Carolinum . From 1828 to 1840 he was director of the Weilburg grammar school and high school councilor. In 1830 he became a corresponding member of the state government for scholars. In 1836 he received an honorary doctorate from the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig . In 1840 he became director of the Nassau Central Archives in Idstein (today the Hessian Main State Archives, Wiesbaden). Friedmann was an honorary member of the Latin Society in Jena and a member of the Association for Patriotic Antiquities.

politics

In 1832 Friedrich Traugott Friedemann was elected from the group of heads of the clergy and higher education institutions to the Chamber of Deputies of the estates of the Duchy of Nassau . After his election was declared invalid, he was re-elected in a by-election. He had the mandate until 1838 inside. In the Nassau domain dispute , he represented the government's position.

family

Friedrich Traugott Friedemann, who was a Protestant denomination, married Karoline Wilhelmine née Salzberger on June 29, 1817 (* in Reichenbach / Vogtland; after 1853). There were seven children from the marriage.
