The Institute for Regional Studies in Saarland (IfLiS) e. V. is an institute for scientific research and documentation of regional and folklore of the Saarland and neighboring areas.

History and organization

The institute was founded in 1959 by the Saarland government and for many years was a subordinate authority of the Ministry of Culture. The IfLiS has been organized as a non-profit association since November 2005. The IfLiS works closely with the Saarland state government, in particular with the Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection and the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy and Transport.

The Institute for Regional Studies in Saarland is housed in the mine house of the Reden mine, built in 1936/38, in the Saarland municipality of Schiffweiler ( Neunkirchen district ). The institute's director is a geographer, regional historian and industrial culture expert Delf Slotta . Heinz Quasten (scientific advisory board) and Christian Jung (general assembly) complete the board.

tasks

The IfLiS has the task of scientifically researching and documenting the regional and folklore of the Saarland and adjacent areas. Regional research projects as well as comparative studies within the Saar-Lor-Lux region contribute to this . It also supports regional development projects in Saarland and advises politicians on issues such as urban development , village renewal and industrial culture .

One of the tasks of the institute is to coordinate regional studies research in Saarland, in particular in cooperation with the Saarland University and local history organizations in the region. The aim of the IfLiS is to bring together as many people as possible who are interested in regional and folklore and the history of our region.

Events and services

The institute organizes specialist conferences, congresses as well as regional and folklore excursions, guided tours and lectures, arranges specialists and maintains contacts with universities.

Since 1984 it has organized the competition “Saarland farmhouses - testimonies to our homeland”, which is intended to encourage and promote the owners' initiative to preserve and care for the old buildings. Particularly well-preserved and well-cared for buildings are awarded.

Library and map collection

The institute has a reference library that is accessible through an online catalog. The holdings include regional and folklore specialist literature as well as works on regional history, specialist magazines and a dedicated map collection with topographical and historical maps.
