The Helmholtz-Gymnasium Heidelberg (short: HGH ), named after the natural scientist Hermann von Helmholtz , is part of the network system of the Elite School of Sports and the partner school for the Olympics of the Rhine-Neckar Olympic base . The school offers bilingual teaching English-German for geography , history and biology as a partner school in Europe . There is also a rating in the natural sciences : the Helmholtz is a base school for molecular biology .

history

On November 23, 1835, the Helmholtz was founded as a higher citizen school. It was housed in the building of the former Jesuit college in the Kettengasse in Heidelberg's old town. On December 31, 1884, what was then Helmholtz was granted the status of Realschule . In 1896 it was converted to an upper secondary school , which led to the right to study mathematics and natural sciences. After the incorporation of a secondary school department (1922), the school was called "Oberrealschule mit Gymnasium" from 1927 onwards. In 1937 the school was given a name for the first time: the Philipp-Lenard-Schule , after the physicist Philipp Lenard . During the Third Reich , the school was converted into a high school for boys as part of the Reich school reform in 1938 . On September 11, 1945 it was finally renamed the Helmholtz-Gymnasium , as Philipp Lenard, who was deeply involved in National Socialist ideas, was no longer acceptable as a role model. In the school year 1968/1969 the school finally moved to its current schoolhouse.
