Louis Ferdinand Helbig
Louis Ferdinand Helbig (born September 2, 1935 in Liegnitz , Lower Silesia Province ; † December 3, 2019 in Berlin ) was a German German philologist and literary historian.
Life
Helbig attended elementary school in Sagan . After the flight and expulsion of Germans from Central and Eastern Europe 1945–1950 , he graduated from the Helmholtz High School in Heidelberg in 1955 . After an apprenticeship as a wholesale merchant in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , he emigrated to Canada in 1958 , where he initially worked in industry . From 1963 to 1969 he studied German , history and philosophy at the University of Alberta and the University of Waterloo . In Waterloo he received his Ph.D. PhD . He was then a professor at Indiana University Bloomington and until 1976 director of its Institute of German Studies . From 1985 he was visiting professor several times at the University of Dortmund and its research center for East Central Europe. From 1995 he was a lecturer at the University of Savoy . Since 2000 he has taught and researched at the German Institute of the University of Zielona Góra in his native Silesia .
