Ninove is a town in the Denderstreek in the Belgian province of East Flanders . It is on the Dender River . In addition to the city, the municipality consists of the districts of Appelterre-Eichem, Aspelare, Denderwindeke, Lieferinge, Meerbeke , Nederhasselt, Neigem, Okegem, Outer, Pollare and Voorde .

history

Archaeological finds attest to the settlement of the area since the Neolithic Age . Ninove goes back to a small settlement that expanded into a farming village in the 5th century with the arrival of the Franks. By the 12th century, Ninove had become quite an important town due to trade and a fortified castle. A Premonstratensian abbey was also founded near Ninove. In the 15th to 17th centuries the city declined, which only slowly grew again in the middle of the 18th century. In the second half of the 19th century, the first factories settled in Ninove; Ninove became a center of the Flemish match industry during the First World War . The city's population grew from 4,400 in 1834 to 12,000 in 1970.
