Stekene is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region . It is located in the province of East Flanders and belongs to the arrondissement of Sint-Niklaas . The municipality has 18,445 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and an area of ​​44.80 km².

Stekene consists of the main town and the districts Hellestraat , Kemzeke , Klein-Sinaai and Koewacht . The municipality borders directly on the Dutch province of Zeeland . The core town is 8 km northwest of Sint-Niklaas , 25 km west of Antwerp , 27 km northeast of Ghent and 46 km northwest of Brussels (all information as the crow flies to the city centers).

The next motorway exits are a few km southwest at Waasmunster and Sint-Niklaas on the A14 / E17 .

The nearest regional train station is in Sint-Niklaas and the nearest train stations in Antwerp and Ghent with national train connections.

There is a regional airport near Antwerp and an international airport near the Belgian capital Brussels.
