Kruisem is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders , which was created on January 1, 2019 from the merger of the municipalities of Kruishoutem and Zingem . The merged municipality has an area of ​​70.70 km² and has more than 15,000 inhabitants.

Merger

The government provides incentives for voluntary consolidation of municipalities. The municipal councils of Kruishoutem and Zingem approved a merger in 2017, which was ratified by a decree of May 4, 2018, as well as several other mergers with effect from January 1, 2019.

As of January 1, 2018, the municipality of Kruishoutem had a population of 8086 and Zingem a population of 7552.
