history

Church and parish hall.

In the Carolingian period up to the eleventh century, Buggenhout was in the Brabantgau. After that it was part of the Brussels quarter of the Duchy of Brabant until the end of the 18th century. In the late Middle Ages, a Brabant-Flemish border commission had to check the border posts regularly. In 1796 the French occupiers added Buggenhout to the Schelde department, which in 1815 became the province of East Flanders.

Parish parts

Opdorp

Geographical center of Flanders, near Opdorp

Opdorp is located on the border triangle between the three provinces of East Flanders, Antwerp and Flemish Brabant and was an independent municipality until it was incorporated in 1965.

A 3.7 hectare square from Franconian times, de Dries, planted with grass and trees and around 100,000 flowering daffodils is particularly worth seeing. The square is also used for the fair on the first Monday of July and is not only a listed building, but has also been proclaimed the best Pleintje , the most beautiful place , by Radio 2 Oost-Vlaanderen . The local history museum Ter Palen is housed in "Kasteel aan de Dries" (Vekenstraat 1).

Professor Theodoor Van Der Waeteren from the Toegepaste Wetenschappen faculty gave his students at the Catholic University of Leuven the task of determining the geographical center of the Flemish community. They calculated that it was on the outskirts of the Opdorp sub-municipality .

Opstal

Opstal means something like "common pasture land", referring to the Central Dutch usage for areas where nobody could assert a personal right of use. In 1292, the Abbey of Grimbergen gave part of Buggenhout to the Lords of Bournonville as a fief (see House of Bournonville ). This created two entities. One of the two comprised Opstal and remained under the direct rule of Grimbergen Abbey. Each section had its own aldermen, four members and clerks. Opstal was mortgaged by the old division between Bournonville and Grimbergen.

The idea of building a church in Opstal arose in 1875 when the population of Opstal sent a request to the diocese to be allowed to build their own church. Since 1876, the Opstallers also called for their own teaching facilities in their district, which met with strong resistance in Buggenhout. There was a proposal from the diocese to build a Catholic school, but this was rejected by the Buggenhout community. In 1892 the free boys' school was relocated to Opstal. In October 1897 the school opened for 253 children. The football club Eintracht Opstal (Eendracht Opstal) played in the national league for several seasons at the beginning of the 21st century.

Briel

Den Briel or Briel is a sub-community and also a parish, located on the Scheldt between Baasrode and Sint-Amands , and consists of two parts, namely the larger southern and eastern old Briel including today's church square, and the northwestern new Briel, which is partially Belongs to Buggenhout and partly to Baasrode (part of Dendermonde since 1976) near the Baasrode-Noord train station. Initially completely in Baasrode, the area of the new Briel was built on by road construction and has grown together with the area of the old Briel and for the sake of simplicity, because it includes the western part of the parish, has been given this name. The road between Mechelen and Dendermonde crosses the area from east to west, as does the decommissioned train line Antwerp - Puurs - Dendermonde. When the parish was established, around 600 inhabitants from Baasrode and 800 from Buggenhout lived in the area, an eleventh and eighth of the community population. The greater part of the parish belongs to Buggenhout.

Probably today Briel the oldest living core of the region Baceroth extending from Vlassenbroek until after Mariekerke reached out and once considered Cuytelghem was known. Briel was part of it, but the name Cuytelghem disappeared in favor of Briel, so that the whole area is now called accordingly.
