Haaltert is a Belgian municipality in the Denderstreek in the Flanders region with 18,633 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It consists of the core town and the districts of Denderhoutem , Heldergem and Kerksken .

The Molenbeek-Ter Erpenbeek runs through Heldergem, Kerksken and Haaltert.

Aalst is 5 kilometers north, Brussels 25 km southwest and Ghent 25 km northwest.

The next motorway exit is at Aalst on the A10 / E 40 .
Haaltert has a regional train station on the Kortrijk - Oudenaarde - Zottegem - Haaltert - Brussels line, with others in Aalst and Denderleeuw .

There is also a 205 hectare nature reserve: Den Dotter in the sub-municipalities of Aaigem (municipality of Erpe-Mere ) and Heldergem (municipality of Haaltert).

The districts of Haaltert, Heldergem and Kerksken belonged to the heerlijkheid van Latem en Lilaer (Glory of Latem and Lilaer) in earlier times . Other places of this glory were Aspelare, Aaigem, Sint-Antelinks and Woubrechtegem .
