Bakery in Den Dotter

Den Dotter is a 205 hectare nature reserve in the sub-municipalities of Aaigem (municipality of Erpe-Mere ) and Heldergem (municipality of Haaltert ) in the East Flemish Denderstreek . It is a swampy, almost uninhabited area that is traversed by the Molenbeek-Ter Erpenbeek creek , which is known for its numerous mills (molens).

Road network

Numerous hiking and cycling trails run through the Dotter . The Den Dotter hiking trail starts at the church of Aaigem . The trail is around 10 km long and ends in the Gotegem district . A stream meanders through the nature reserve, in which there is a diverse flora with over 300 plant species. Hikers can cross the area on paved paths.

The park administration mainly deals with clearing and replanting trees, good drainage and mowing the meadows with the marsh marigolds that grow everywhere . The marsh marigold ( Dutch : dotterbloem ) gave the nature reserve its name.
