history

Like all Flemish place names with "-gem", the von Aaigem etymologically goes back to a Germanic composition with - Haim Wohnplatz, Heem (German: Heim) and a derivative of "-inga", the first part usually being the Germanic male name Ago reconstructed the name of an otherwise unknown person. The totality "Agingahaim" then means Agingenheem (Agingenheim in German), the residence of the tribal members or followers of the Ago. The earliest mentions were in the 11th century.

Perhaps the area was owned by Aaigem before the invasions of the Vikings to the Abbey of Sint-Pieters or Sint Bavo in Ghent. In any case, from around 1100 the church was owned by the Anchin Abbey in Pecquencourt (now in northern France), which owned a lot of land in Aaigem until the French Revolution . Although agriculture remained the main source of livelihood into the 20th century, there has traditionally been some industrial activity, as evidenced by the watermills. The modest rural industry of the 19th and 20th centuries with a number of dairies has completely disappeared. During the period of feudalism belonged Aaigem to the land of Aalst and in this land to the land of Haaltert, later called the Land of Rotselaar, by the Lords of Rotselaar who were lords for generations.
