history

Bambrugge belonged to the village of Burst until 1803 . According to a census in 1893, the village had 872 inhabitants. Bambrugge was mentioned several times in the Middle Ages . The name probably comes from the so-called banmolens (banmolen = mill compulsion). In these mills, serfs were obliged to grind their grain. Another possibility is that the name is derived from the word "baan" (railway = road) or from Banbrugge (bridge of Banno).

Attractions

  • The Egemmolen or Meuleken Tik Tak is an overshot water mill and is located in Everdal 21. It was a grain mill . The water wheel has been removed. In Flanders it is common for the streets with churches to end in "dorp". In Erpe-Mere there are eight streets named after the eight sub-municipalities: Aaigemdorp, Bambruggedorp, Burstdorp, Erondegemdorp, Erpedorp, Meredorp, Ottergemdorp and Vlekkemdorp.

Domain Steenberg

Even the Romans knew early on that there was white natural stone (called Vlaamse arduin or Lediaanse Steen) in the Steenberg in Bambrugge. It was suitable as a foundation for the masonry of Roman villas , fountains, or as material for columns and capitals in Roman temples. From around the 11th or 12th century, white sandstone was mined in Bambrugge (Steenberg). The most common white natural stone in Brabant was the sandstone extracted there in the 16th to 17th centuries. The quarry was only given up after the Second World War . Today the administrative center of Erpe-Mere is located there.
