history

Around the beginning of the 19th century, Ottergem was one of the smallest villages in the Dendermonde arrondissement. With 155 hectares and 520 souls, it was much smaller than the surrounding villages. The village was first mentioned in an official document in 1036. In this charter of the Emperor Koenraad II, he recognized the Abbey of St. Pietersabdij in Ghent and its possessions and spoke of "et in Bursinghem et terram in Ottringhem et terram in Flachem". Ottergem has been used since 1142, but the variations Ottrenghem, Ottregem and Oterghem were also known. According to the historian de Smet, the name is derived from the otter; his colleague Föstermann is of the opinion that the name is derived from a personal name. Towards the end of the 19th century there was a water mill and an oil mill.
