Burst is a sub-municipality of Erpe-Mere on the Molenbeek in the Denderstreek in the Flanders region . It is located in the southeast of the province of East Flanders and belongs to the Arrondissement of Aalst . The sub-municipality is bounded by the sub-municipalities Bambrugge and Aaigem and the municipality areas of Herzele (sub-municipalities Ressegem and Borsbeke) and Sint-Lievens-Houtem (sub-municipalities Vlierzele and Zonnegem). Burst has 2968 inhabitants (January 1, 2003) and an area of ​​3.83 km². The population density is 776 inhabitants / km².

history

The name Burst was first found in a document from St. Pietersabdij (Abbey) in Ghent. In this document from 1042 it is stated that the village of Burste is adjacent to a river of the same name, the Bursitia juxta fluviolum Burste . A century later, in 1151, Burst was first mentioned under its current name. In addition, the village was named Borst, Bost and Bust in several documents in the following decades. In 1846 the village had 125 farms, including some large ones. At that time there was a wheat windmill, three breweries and three distilleries in the village. At the beginning of the 19th century the village had 304 inhabitants and at the beginning of the 20th century it had 963 inhabitants.

Attractions

The Sint-Martinuskirche is in Burst. Burst is part of the Lede Deanery. In 2011 there are still nine chapels there. Most are still in good condition, but there are also some that are not maintained. There is also a cave in Burst.

Sports

In Burst the football club KFC Olympic Burst plays, which is currently (2012) active in the third provincial of the province of East Flanders.

tourism

The Molenbeek route runs through Burst. The Molenbeek route is a junction system, best known for the mills in the municipality of Erpe-Mere and two streams, both of which are called Molenbeek (Mühlenbach).
