history
The remains of a Roman villa have been found in the Jeruzalemstraat (a street) on the opposite side of the windmill (on the hill opposite the Merelputstraat). Mere was mentioned in a document as Meren in 1003. Perhaps the name comes from the numerous swamps (Meren in Dutch) near the village. At the beginning of the 19th century the village had 1,874 inhabitants and at the end of the 19th century it had 2942 inhabitants. At that time there was a windmill, three water mills and a factory that gave jobs to 1,000 people. Every year around 300 people went to France to help with the harvest as seasonal workers.
geography
The highest point of the sub-municipality Mere is on the 68 meter high Gotegemberg. In the Diepestraat (a street) next to the windmill, the teeth of various marine fish, including sharks, have been found. They show that in prehistory the land was at the bottom of a sea.
