The Molenbeek is a brook in the Belgian province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek . It has a length of about 22 km. The source of the Molenbeek is in Grotenberge and the confluence in Wichelen with the Scheldt . Not to be confused with the Molenbeek-Ter Erpenbeek , which also flows through Erpe-Mere (and Herzele).

Catchment area

The catchment area of ​​the Molenbeek is located in the province of East Flanders and extends mainly over the area of ​​the municipalities of Wichelen ( Schellebelle , Serskamp , Wichelen), Lede ( Wanzele , Impe , Smetlede , Papegem , Lede, Oordegem ), Erpe-Mere ( Erondegem , Vlekkem , Ottergem , Bambrugge and its hamlet Egem , Burst ) and Herzele ( Borsbeke , Herzele, Ressegem , Hillegem ). The catchment area consists in the south of a small part of the municipality of Zottegem ( Grotenberge , Leeuwergem ) and runs in the west over the border into the area of ​​the municipality of Sint-Lievens-Houtem ( Vlierzele , Zonnegem , Letterhoutem ).

The Molenbeek is part of the catchment area of ​​the Drie Molenbeken. The Drie Molenbeken are tributaries of the Bovenschelde. The catchment area of ​​the Molenbeek has an area of ​​about 5276 hectares and is located in the catchment area Bovenschelde. The Molenbeek flows into Wichelen in the Bovenschelde.

From the source in Grotenberge to the mouth near Wichelen, the Molenbeek has the following tributaries: Valleibeek, Fonteinbeek, Doormansbeek, Kasteelgracht, Hellegat, Smoorbeek, Kokelaarsbeek, Zijpbeek, Trotgracht, Overimpebeek, Beekveldzijp, Wellebeek and Vijverbeek.

Mills

There are three mills on the Molenbeek in the municipality of Erpe-Mere. The De Watermeulen in Ottergem is under monument protection . The Egemmolen in Bambrugge was largely destroyed, only the miller's house has survived . The Molens Van Sande in Bambrugge was recently built over and is used as an industrial grinding mill.
