Horticulture (including several tree nurseries) and many small businesses and businesses are important for the economy.

History and sights

Place names with the ending -gem are derived from the Franconian "-haim", the first part refers to the name of a local owner from the 10th century. In 1984–1992 traces of a Roman camp with a side length of more than 155 meters were discovered.

The place is on an old road from Oudenburg to Antwerp . The southern Maldegemveld is a heathland and was mentioned in a document as early as 1170. Up until the end of the 16th century, this was the place of Papinglo, a typical religious settlement with an associated chapel, several priests, lay brothers and sisters. The chapel was in operation from 1187 to 1537 after being reduced in size in 1476. There was also a cemetery.

The rule of Maldegem, which also included Adegem and Sint-Laureins, was owned by the lords (and later counts) of Maldeghem until 1483 . They owned a castle at the site of Kasteel Reesinghe , later a renaissance castle, the ruins of which were removed in the 19th century. Philip III von Maldeghem was a henchman of Count Guido of Flanders around 1300 . The Van Halewijn family followed in 1483 and later the van Claerhout, Vilain, Zuniga y Mendoza and De Fonseca y Ayala families, after which the rulership came to the House of Croÿ . In 1858, Charles-Honoré Pecsteen, ennobled in 1822, built the neo-Gothic Reesinghe castle here. The so-called Sint-Annakasteel is a small building from 1860 on the site of a hospital founded by Arnulf van Maldegem in 1273, which became an estate from the middle of the 16th century, owned by Pieter Goeman from 1669, followed by his son-in-law Jacob Pecsteen.

In the center of Maldegem there are some historically interesting buildings, e.g. B. the church of St. Barbara, the deacon house (dekenij) and a small castle, the Sint-Annakasteel .
