Beveren is a Belgian municipality in the province of East Flanders with 48,668 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). The districts Beveren, Melsele, Haasdonk, Vrasene, Kieldrecht, Verrebroek, Kallo and Doel belong to the municipality.
history
Today's community was created after the reorganization in 1977, when the remaining districts were incorporated. Since then it has been one of the largest municipalities in Belgium in terms of area.
Beveren is the oldest political center in Waasland , a region in the northeast of the province of East Flanders. The small Cortewalle Castle from the 15th century and the Hof ter Saksen from the 18th century have been preserved.
In the year 2000 an excellently preserved cog was found and excavated in the district of Doel . The 20 meter long and seven meter wide ship dates from the first half of the 14th century and is known as the Doeler Kogge after its location .

economy
In the north of the municipality, on the left bank of the Scheldt, there is a large part of the Antwerp port , including Deurganckhaven , Antwerp's largest container terminal, roughly comparable to the Hamburg-Altenwerder container terminal .
In the Doel district there is a nuclear power plant with four reactors, which was built from 1969 to 1985. Doel itself is to be completely demolished for an extension of the Antwerp port, at this point a new dock is to be built. A tough argument has broken out between the last inhabitants of Doel and the government.
