Zelzate is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders . She gained notoriety by receiving the European Prize in 1972 .
Zelzate has 12,854 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and covers an area of 13.71 km², which results in a population density of 938 inhabitants per km².
Industry
Zelzate is a heavily industrialized community. The Rhodia company has a chemical plant in the city itself . Due to the industry, numerous action groups against the pollution emerged. In the last few years in particular, attempts have been made to reduce environmental pollution. Among other things, the steel company ArcelorMittal (formerly Sidmar) has invested large sums of money to implement measures to reduce pollutant emissions.
