Temse ( French : Tamise ) is a Belgian municipality with 29,182 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2015), in the province of East Flanders , in the arrondissement of Sint-Niklaas .
The municipality, located on the Scheldt , became famous for its 365 m longest bridge in Belgium and the former Boel shipyard .
In 1977 the towns of Steendorp, Tielrode and Elversele were incorporated.
The name Temse is possibly derived from the Gallo-Roman Tamasiacum , the Romans called the settlement on the banks of the Scheldt Tempseca . Also possible are Indo-European-Old European or Latin roots: Tam ... would stand for "darker ..." and " Amisia " is the Roman name for the river Ems in Germany. The linguistic similarity with the English River Thames is not surprising . In the 2nd century BC the term Tamesis was synonymous with flowing waters in many places .
The patroness of Temse is Sankt Amelberga , who founded the first parish around 770 , one of the oldest parishes in the Waasland .
A town partnership with Eupen has existed since 1975 .
