The Otto Hahn Gymnasium is a grammar school in Saarbrücken with a mathematical, scientific and modern language branch, named after the German chemist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry Otto Hahn (1879–1968). The school building, built by Wilhelm Franz between 1902 and 1904, is now a listed building .
history
Today's Otto Hahn Gymnasium (OHG) goes back to the “Royal Provincial Industrial School”, which was opened on October 28, 1856 in what is now the old part of Saarbrücken. The school led to the Abitur in three grades (Tertia, Secunda, Prima). The training was very technology-oriented. In the course of its history, the grammar school changed its name several times, but retained its mathematical and scientific orientation for a long time. A new language branch was not introduced until the 1967/68 school year. Also in the 1960s, with the introduction of co-education, girls were admitted to the school.
The grammar school has been at its current location, Landwehrplatz, since moving into a new building in 1904. In 1954/55 the extension on Nauwieserplatz (today's Max-Ophüls- Platz) was completed. Since October 1955, the Otto Hahn Gymnasium has also housed the Saarbrücken Evening Gymnasium .
In 2006 the Otto Hahn Gymnasium celebrated its 150th anniversary.
