New Saar group

The Neue Gruppe Saar is an association of Saarland artists that was founded in 1957.

The “new group saar”, also known as Neue Gruppe de la Sarre , was founded in 1957 at the suggestion of Boris Kleint . At the time, Kleint was the head of the painting class at the State School for Arts and Crafts in Saarbrücken . The foundation coincided with the social and cultural rethinking of the post-war period, which was accompanied by a spirit of optimism and the search for new forms of organization, especially in the artistic field. The aim was to connect a broader public with the artists' emerging ideas. The artists of the Saar area, which was administered by France for 10 years, looked for the connection to the artistic development in Germany, for which West German artists were invited to the Saarland.

Artistically, the group was based on the ideas of the Bauhaus , which Kleint included in the teaching of the Saarbrücken art school. In this respect, the members of the “new group saar” pursued tendencies in concrete-constructive art . Some of the group, including Kilian Breier , sought contact with the ZERO group , which led to a joint exhibition with Heinz Mack and Otto Piene in 1959 . Another goal of the group is to intensify international artistic interdependencies, ultimately also a community of exhibition purposes.

In addition to Kleint, other members of the group included Oskar Holweck (co-founder), Hannes Neuner , Eve Neuner-Kayser, Rolf Duroy, Horst Linn , Paul Antonius, Barbara Bredow , Kilian Breier , Monika von Boch , Harald Boockmann, P. Burkart, August Clüsserath , Jo Enzweiler , Rolf Glasmeier , Leo Grewenig , Heinz Habermann, Margarete Heisler, Ewerdt Hilgemann , Wolfram Huschens , Wolfgang Kermer , Margarete Palz , Sigurd Rompza , Hans Willi Scherf, Paul Schneider , Werner Schreib , Johannes Schreiter, Ed Sommer , Hans Wilhelm Sotrop, Willi Spiess and Hans Dahlem .

The group had their first group exhibition in 1958 at the Saarland Museum in Saarbrücken .
