Hermann Josef "Jo" Enzweiler (born April 16, 1934 in Merzig-Büdingen ) is a German visual artist and art educator .

Biographical

From 1954 to 1956 Enzweiler studied law at the universities in Saarbrücken and Hamburg . In the years 1956–1961 he studied painting and art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Ernst Geitlinger . He then continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts ( Toulon ) with Henri Olive-Tamari (1898–1980) at the University of Aix-en-Provence and at the Saarbrücken University Institute for Art and Craft Education with Boris Kleint . In addition, he studied the French language for two years.

From 1959 to 1972 he worked as an art teacher at the State Girls' High School in Saarbrücken. He then taught graphic design as an academic advisor at the Saarland University of Education until 1978. In 1969 he founded the “Galerie St. Johann” (Saarbrücken) with fellow artists, and has been its artistic advisor and co-editor of publications ever since.

In 1979 Enzweiler was appointed professor at the Saarland University of Applied Sciences, Department of Design, for the teaching area "Artistic Printmaking". In 1988 he was appointed by the Saarland state government as the founding commissioner of the Saar College of Fine Arts , one year later he became its founding rector; until 1999 he taught there as a professor of painting. On his initiative, the " Institute for Current Art in Saarland " was founded in 1993 , which was later integrated into the Saar College of Fine Arts. The purpose of the institute is to promote artists in the Saarland and the greater region , as well as the mediation of art.

Enzweiler has been a member of the artist group “neue gruppe saar” and the German Werkbund since 1960 .

Jo Enzweiler lives and works in Saarbrücken and Wallerfangen . He is a co-founder of the research center for artists' bequests in Saarlouis.
