Robert Zimmer (born October 25, 1953 in Trier ) is a German philosopher , essayist and literary scholar . As a freelance author and journalist , he mainly publishes introductions to philosophy in the fields of popular science.

Life

Robert Zimmer spent his school days in Saarbrücken . He completed his studies in philosophy and English at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken in 1981 with a master's thesis on Benedetto Croce ( unity and development in Benedetto Croce's aesthetics ), which was also published in 1985. The work closes "an important gap in research", according to the Italian philosopher Riccardo Pozzo, "as it describes in detail a central concept of Croce's philosophy with completeness, precision, well-read and independent argumentation." 1989 doctorate room with a dissertation on Edmund Burke at the Heinrich-Heine University in Dusseldorf , Edmund Burke's rhetoric in his Irish writings .. Room worked until 1991 as a lecturer at the Heinrich-Heine University and until 1996 as a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin . In addition, he worked for many years as a lecturer at adult education centers. Then he began to work as a freelance non-fiction author. From 1986 to 2013 he lived in Berlin and since then in Stuttgart.

Zimmer's concern is to convey classic philosophy contents to a broad audience in an understandable language. That is why the tradition of essay writing from Montaigne to Sainte-Beuve to Schopenhauer is also formative for him. In 2013, Zimmer published the first selected translation of Sainte-Beuves “Causeries du Lundi” in decades. In his Schopenhauer biography, published in 2010, he places the philosopher in the tradition of moral studies and enlightenment. His best-known book is Das Philosophenportal , published in 2004 and translated into several languages , the first part of a work-oriented, essayistic philosophy history, which was followed in 2007 by Das neue Philosophenportal . The project was completed in 2009 with the Great Philosopher's Portal and the volume of essays Basic Library Philosophy . Zimmer belongs to the circle of critical rationalism . Together with Martin Morgenstern he wrote a biography about Karl Popper and edited the correspondence between Karl Popper and Hans Albert . Popper's methodological maxim of trial and error (Engl. Trial and error ), he tried for a renewal of the moralist and a philosophy of the art of living make fruitful (See u. A. Life as trial and error. Zimmer is a member of the two Constantin-Brunner Foundations and is committed to rediscovering the work of the German-Jewish philosopher Constantin Brunner.
