Life

Irons was born in Hanalei on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i. His father was a well known surfer in the late 1970s and taught him to surf in his early teens. When he wasn't in the water, he played tennis or golf to compensate. His sponsors included Billabong , Red Bull , Von Zipper, Amp'd Mobile and Dakine .

Andy Irons died on November 2, 2010 at the age of 32 on his way back from a surfing competition in Puerto Rico, mainly of a heart attack caused by a blocked coronary artery . The secondary cause is a mix of drugs and medication found in the body.

He left behind his heavily pregnant wife Lyndie, to whom he had been married since November 25, 2007. Their son Andrew Axel was born on December 8, 2010.

Career

Irons greatest successes were three world titles in a row in the years 2002 to 2004. He also won three times in a row the Quiksilver Pro France competitions in the years 2003 to 2005, twice the Rip Curl Pro competitions in the years 2006 and 2007, and four times subsequently the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing from 2002 to 2006. On September 3, 2010, Irons won the Billabong Pro Teahupoo in Tahiti. It was the last major competition before his death.

Life's work

The surf film Andy Irons: Kissed by God (2018) pays homage to his life's work. Companions like Bruce Irons, Kelly Slater and Andy Irons widow Lyndie tell the story of a rock and roll life and the death of a brilliant surfer.

The documentary Blue Horizon (2004) by director Jack McCoy shows Andy Irons at the height of his career. The film also tells of the longstanding rivalry between Irons and eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater.

Others

The governor of the state of Hawai'i declared February 13th to be "Andy Irons Day", because he is the only surfer in the world to have won the competitions at every location on the ASP World Tour.
