Pipeline - one of the three locations of the Triple Crown of Surfing

The Triple Crown of Surfing is a competition in surfing , the year on the North Shore of the Hawaiian island of Oahu is organized. After the surfing world championship, it is the most important competition in this sport and concludes the professional surfing season of the Qualifying Series and the Championship Tour .

history

Competitive surfing has its roots in Hawaii , where the indigenous Hawaiian people have competed against each other for fun while surfing for centuries. In 1953, the Waikiki Surf Club in Makaha , Oahu, organized the first international surfing competition, the Makaha International Surfing Championships , in which a jury awarded points to the surfers for their performance. In 1983 surfer Fred Hemmings created a competitive title that combined the three major surfing events taking place on Oahu, the Pipeline Masters , the World Cup of Surfing and the Hawaiian Pro , and combined them into the Triple Crown of Surfing Series . He tried to draw the world's attention to the most important surfing spots on Oahu, which in his opinion are the most exciting and best in the world. It did so after the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) removed the North Shore events from their world tour. In 1997 a women's division was added. However, the lack of sponsors often prevented them from participating.

Venues

The Triple Crown of Surfing takes place every year between November 12th and December 20th at three locations: the Hawaiian Pro at Ali'i Beach Park in Haleiwa , the World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach and the Pipeline Masters at Ehukai Beach Park, both in Pupukea . The winner is the one who surfs best in all three places.

Prize money

The total prize money for all three events is $ 1.15 million. The winner of around 170 participants in the competition will receive a bonus of US $ 50,000.
