Layne Beachley AO (born May 24, 1972 in Sydney ) is a former professional surfer from Manly in Australia . She was seven times world champion of the ASP World Championship.

Career

Beachley became a professional surfer at the age of 16 . At the age of 20 she was sixth in the world rankings. Beachley first won the ASP Women's World Championship in 1998. She then won this title in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2006. She shares the record of seven World Cup titles with Stephanie Gilmore , her six victories in a row are also record.

In 2004 Beachley received a wildcard for the Men's Energy Australia Open in Newcastle .

Beachley announced her retirement on October 10, 2008 for reasons of age.

In 2004 she won the Laureus World Sports Award in the “Alternative Sportswoman of the Year” category.
