The film was first shown on May 7, 2003 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York , USA . The official premiere took place on August 5, 2003 in the USA. On August 8, 2003, the film was shown in other selected locations in the USA and from August 29 worldwide in cinemas. The film was released on DVD on April 20, 2004.

The documentary by the director and screenwriter Dana Brown shows not only the passion, but also the motivation of the most diverse surfers for this water sport . Not only are professional surfers presented at the most beautiful, unusual and important surf spots worldwide, but also a large variety of passionate fans. Brown's interviews with passionate surfers, surf professionals and contemporary witnesses impressively illustrate the different facets of surfing and show the true motivation of the athletes.

The film includes, among other things, impressive shots from the Pacific coast of California, Costa Rica , Tahiti , Vietnam and Easter Island to the famous Hawaiian pipeline and the giant waves of Cortes Bank, which have had a lasting impact on big wave surfing .

Dana Brown is a passionate surfer herself and the son of Bruce Brown, the director of the legendary surf film The Endless Summer . The film Step into Liquid was his first own project.
