John "John John" Alexander Florence (born October 18, 1992 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is an American professional surfer and two-time world champion of the World Surf League .

Life

John John Florence, the eldest of three brothers, grew up on the North Shore of O'ahu , Hawaii, in close proximity to the famous surfing spot Banzai Pipeline. Neighbors were the professional surfers Kelly Slater and Andy Irons and the surfer and pop musician Jack Johnson .

It is named after the son of the former President of the United States , John F. Kennedy, Jr. , whose nickname in the media during his father's tenure was John-John. His then alcoholic father left the family and Hawaii when his sons were very young.

At the age of 6 months he rode a surfboard for the first time with the help of his mother Alexandra. When he was five he stood alone on the surfboard for the first time. John John first gained attention in the surfing scene when he surfed the dangerous Pipeline at the age of 8.

In his teenage years, he competed in national contests and received awards. In the winter of 2005, at the age of 13, he entered the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing competition in Hawaii, making him the youngest competitor in the history of the competition.

In 2011 he took part in the ASP-World Tour , the surfing world championship , for the first time . That same year, he became the youngest surfer ever to win the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing competition. He was able to repeat this success in 2013.

In 2012 he had his first success on the World Tour with the Rio Pro and finished the year 4th overall. He finished the year 2013 without victories with an injury break in tenth place, in 2014 with a victory as third overall and the year 2015 with another injury break, without a win, in 14th overall.

On February 25, 2016, John John Florence won The Eddie Big Wave Invitational, which is held in memory of Eddie Aikau . Participants ride waves that can reach heights of up to 12 meters and more. Since there are seldom the necessary conditions for this, the contest has only taken place 9 times since 1984. Florence also won the Rio Pro in 2016 and with a victory in Peniche at the MEO Rip Curl Pro, he was able to celebrate his first world title ahead of schedule.

With only one win (at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in Australia), but otherwise consistently good results, John John Florence successfully defended his title and received his second world title.

The 2018 season started very mixed, there were no top placements. After the 5th competition, the season was over for Florence due to a knee injury (partial tear of the cruciate ligament ). He decided against an operation.

The year 2019 started successfully for Florence with 2 wins and a 3rd place in 4 competitions and was thus by a large margin on first place in the overall ranking. In the 5th contest he was eliminated in the quarter-finals after another cruciate ligament rupture on the previously injured one. This time he had an operation. After an unexpectedly early return to the tour at the last competition in Hawaii, John John Florence managed to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan.

John John Florence has been married to Australian model Lauryn Florence (née Cribb) since 2020 and lives on the North Shore of O'ahu, Hawaii.

Others

John John Florence is considered the most versatile surfer on the world tour. He manages spectacular airs (tricks in the air), powerful turns, perfected tube riding and masters huge waves like the one at "The Eddie" in Waimea Bea.

The surf film View from a Blue Moon from 2015 accompanies John John Florence and his closest friends on their way from their home on the north coast of O'ahu to surfing sites around the world. The film is considered to be the best, but also the most expensive, production in the history of sport.

In 2016, Florence produced the semi-biographical series Twelve in collaboration with his sponsor at the time, Hurley , which accompanied him for an entire year on the way to his first world title.

As a passionate sailor, he took part in the Sydney-Hobart Regatta in 2019 .

His two brothers, Nathan (* 1994) and Ivan (* 1996), are also sponsored surfers. Nathan has been surfing the Big Wave World Tour and occasionally smaller WSL Qualifying Series competitions since 2018.

Florence surfed for 15 years with O'Neill as the main sponsor until he switched to Hurley (then part of Nike ) in early 2013 . In January 2020, the contract with Hurley was terminated.
